About Clube Praia da Oura |
Jack Petchey with his combined incredible foresight and entrepreneurial spirit created a holiday resort on a prime site of coastal land in what was once the small fishing village of Oura.
The first phase of CPO apartments, built around the swimming pool, soon rose above the now famous Golden Beach, heralding the beginnings of a major tourist industry in the Algarve, which was set to alter the way of life for both overseas visitors and locals alike. Early owners Reg and Muriel Tarrant, from Cambridge, remember Albufeira as a bustling fishing village.

However the beaches have lost none of their character, and there are still old villages dotted around the coast - like Burgau near Lagos - which retain a sleepy traditional charm.
From just a handful of owners, the resort has grown to number more than 18,000 owners from many countries worldwide.
The Bowling Green, added in 1989, was a "first" for the coast, recalls owner Tom Holt, followed by a new car park, shops at reception, a laundry, and a children's playground. |

But it's those little things that some owners recall!
Edith Harrison watched as the sauna was built around 1994 "because my husband was never out of it", she laughs.
Today, there are around 18,000 owners who are living the CPO dream - a far cry from 30 years ago when Jack Petchey was laying those first foundations.
